Just because they can be wished back doesn’t mean it’s any easier to deal with their deaths. Dende tries to assure her that they can be wished back to life later, but for Bulma, that’s not much comfort. He wasn’t in Movie 15, and then they worked him back into that story when they adapted Movie 15 for the second arc of Dragon Ball Super. But Gotenks was supposed to be one of the strongest players in the Buu Saga. But it seemed like they had forgotten him, in that Hirudegarn and Beerus beat him effortlessly. In Movies 12-14, he doesn’t stick around for very long, and it’s almost like they only used him just to make clear to the audience that they hadn’t forgotten about him. Gotenks doesn’t appear at all in Dragon Ball GT. So I always thought it was kind of a raw deal how he was underutilized in later productions. I don’t think I expected him to win, but I knew his fight against Buu would be extremely important, because everything seemed to depend on it. Trunks and Goten had to be protected and trained above all else. With Goku and Vegeta dead, and Gohan without a fusion partner, Gotenks was the only one left to give Buu a run for his money, and this show had spent the last eighteen episodes making Gotenks the number one priority. In 2002, I thought Gotenks was a big fucking deal. I thought he was pointing his fingers like bull horns, but he’s actually holding them near his mouth, I guess to make it look like boar tusks.

The top image is Gotenks performing the “Dynamite Kick”, and when that doesn’t work he follows through by kicking Buu in the side, and calling it the “Dynamite Kick Boomerang.” So he kind of works as an exercise in self-parody. One of Gotenks’ quirks is to use all these moves with zany names, because that’s what he thinks real warriors are supposed to do.

If he uses his full power, he’ll separate into Goten and Trunks after just five minutes, so his big idea is to sandbag for 25 minutes and then go all out for the last five. I don’t know that he’s necessarily stronger, but he’s not screwing around like the previous version of Majin Buu. First, Buu’s changed a lot since Goku fought him.

Then the Fusion Saga started, and it became about buying time for Goten and Trunks to get stronger so that they would stand a chance against Super Buu.īut now, finally, we’re seeing Gotenks fight Majin Buu, and it’s not going nearly as well as Goku had promised. Maybe the only way, since no individual fighter or group of fighters had the power to stand up to Buu. So way back in Episode 240, Goku first mentioned the Fusion Technique as a way to defeat Majin Buu.
